This study aims to investigate differences of play types, physical activity level, and fundamental movement skills at outdoor playgrounds of early childhood education institutions based on gender and analyze the relationship among these variables. The participants were 88 five-year-old children (47 males, 41 females) from 14 childcare facilities located in Seoul and Gyeonggi province. The collected data were analyzed via descriptive statistics, t-test, and Pearson’s correlation analysis. The results of this study are summarized as following; First, children’s play types, physical activity level, and fundamental movement skills at outdoor playgrounds of early childhood education institutions were different according to gender. Boys played more rough-and-tumble plays, while girls participated in more imaginative play, and both the total and manipulative score of boys’ average physical activity level as well as their fundamental movement skills level were significantly higher than girls. Second, there were partially significant relationships among outdoor play behavior, physical activity level, and fundamental movement skills of five-year-old children of both genders. Based on these results, this study discusses implications of outdoor play in terms of improvement of children’s physical activity and fundamental movement skills in early childhood education institutions, as well as its practicality.
