This paper aims to point out the limits of the existing analyses which have been focusing on ‘necessities’ and ‘wants’ and, as a basic research to suggest the method of developing Korean writing curriculum as a liberal education for international students in the university, it analyzes ‘deficiencies’ in writings of international students in the university. After taking Korean writing course, based on reader analysis, international students should be able to produce an academic text quoting materials ethically. And this academic text should secure a creativity of theme, a logical validity, and objectivity of description. To figure out deficiencies in these abilities, this research suggested interaction, knowledge construction including contents, organization and expression, and quotation of materials as the standard of analyzing prewritings and analyzed writings of 90 international students. As a result of analyzing 25 items of assessment, it confirmed that international students did not have the abilities of producing academic texts at all. Therefore, writing courses for international students in the university should be developed, beginning with the basic practices as a foundation for producing academic texts and then proceeding to the steps of performing various writing tasks that directly help enhancing the ability of producing academic texts.
