This article focuses on the Japanese poet and writer Kazue Morisaki, who was born and grew up in Chosun(Korea), exploring her reception of Chosun and its manifestations. Morisaki has said that Chosun created her. However, what was the Chosun that became the template for Morisaki? How was she influenced by Daegu, where she was born, and Gyeongju, the historic place that had the greatest influence on her? How was she influenced by her experiences and memories of people such as her father Kuraji, Kintaro Osaka, Omoni, and Naeya?
Her poem “Dialogue and Nothingness,” considered the first poem in which Morisaki’s representation of Chosun is evident, was published some twenty years after the war and is identical to her poem “Namsan Fantasy,” which was retitled and slightly revised for inclusion in a collection ten years later. By interpreting and discussing these two poems, we examine how Morisaki attempted to represent Chosun through these poems and explore aspects of her post-war career.
