Kang Tae-soo"s life coincides with the process of Soviet Russia"s political ideology, his encounter with Cho Myoung-hee, ‘forced migration in 1937’, the concentration camp, reinstatement as a Soviet citizen, and return to Khzlorda in Kazakhstan. His life as a writer is revealed symbolically in his poetic works, 「To the Lady Plowing the Field」 and 「Giving My Condolences to Sir Cho Myoung-hee」 and his self-narrative, At the Arkhangelsk Concentration Camp in the Soviet Union. Particularly, his encounter with Cho Myoung-hee and life as an author starting to be distorted from 「To the Lady Plowing the Field」 are represented as literary lyricism as well as existential anguish associated with his diasporic worldview.
He wrote his only self-narrative, At the Arkhangelsk Concentration Camp in the Soviet Union, in his later years and then asked an acquaintance to publish it before he died. The work depicts the writer"s gaze in such plain and genuine ways. He says, “It is very loathsome that I have lived my entire life obeying what others say absolutely regardless of my own will and trying to read how others think. Now I feel it"s already quite late, but I want to be the true owner of my destiny even for a single day and live by having my own ideas and judging things through my own eyes. The way that all servants live is mean. Yet, being a servant about ideas or ideologies is even meaner than that.” He expressed his existential agony towards his will to live as a human being in a free world where he can unfold his ideas and thoughts even for a single day. Although he could not get back the time and space of his past life, his spirit as an author still remained intense when he discussed literature meeting Cho Myoung-hee in Wondong and repeated “our ambition that was trampled on” until the end thinking of Cho Myoung-hee. His writer"s spirit symbolized as ‘a lady plowing the field’ can be said to have been sublimated into a feast of nature along with "the restoration of lyricism” at the end of his life paradoxically.
