This paper aims to examine the formation process of the Joseon Headquarters of the Japan Maritime Youth Corps and the contemporary meaning of organizing Korean children into reserve forces for all-out war, focusing on the Japanese language magazine, “Haeguk Boys,” published in Joseon, Japanese colonial era in 1944. Particularly, I aim to examine the integrated relationship between Japanese language magazines published in colonial Joseon in the 1940s, the Joseon Civil Education Association, the Korean Government-General, and the Joseon Army (especially the Japanese Navy stationed in Joseon).
As a result, “Maritime nation boy” was one of the propaganda activities of the Joseon Governor-General"s Office and was edited to recruit excellent personnel to the navy as the war situation worsened. In particular, it emphasized that joining the military for the sake of the conscription system and the Empire of Japan is not an obligation, but a right, while concealing colonial Koreans" poverty and discriminatory hierarchies.
Currently, reading “Maritime nation boy” reveals the process of organizing ordinary Korean boys as reserve soldiers in preparation for all-out war, rather than simply as dichotomous as in Japan and outside Korea, colonies and settlements, and Koreans and Japanese.
