The purpose of this study was to design an instructional model and design principles for video case-based learning (CBL) to improve pre-service teachers’ teaching professionalism. Video cases appear to capture the complexities of classroom interactions and have emerged as an effective instructional strategy in pre-service teacher education. In this study, the design and development research method was applied. The initial model and design principles were developed based on a review of the literature. For internal validity, seven experts and four teacher educators participated in the validation of the initial model and design principles through iterative development processes. For external validity, on-site evaluation was conducted by investigating pre-service teachers’ perceptions of CBL activities to identify areas for improvement in the developed model and principles. The result is a conceptual model with 11 design principles and 25 specific guidelines that provide practical support for teacher educators and researchers in designing and implementing CBL in teacher education settings. Theoretical and practical implications for future research and practice in pre-service education are discussed.
