This study aims to analyze the current trends in geography education research in Japan. The titles and keywords of the academic articles on geography education research published in The New Geography, The Journal of Social Studies, and Journal of Japanese Educational Research Association for the Social Studies during 1998-2018 were chosen as the subject of this study. 31 core concepts were drawn, and the semantic network analysis was conducted. In the semantic network, concepts related to the teaching and learning of geography and social studies, environmental education, regional education, and disaster prevention education were positioned as relatively major nodes. On the other hand, concepts of geography teacher education, curriculum, and geospatial technologies were positioned as comparatively minor nodes. Follow-up studies on detailed discussions of individual Japanese geography education researches and the change and improvements in future trends in geography education research in Japan would probably suggest meaningful implications for South Korean geography education and social studies.
