Emotional labor, one of the hottest issues in our society now, is closely related with the human faculty of sympathy. Sympathy is the an ability to feel the pain of the other as if it is our own and take pity on them. According to David Hume and Rousseau, sympathy is based on our recognition of the human weakness and misery common to all of us, such as pain and death. We have the natural inclination to sympathize with those who suffer. However, it is one thing to sympathize with close friends, and it is another to be forced to sympathize with the strangers because job requires it. Such a forced causes emotional exhaustion, depression, and neurosis. Emotional robots, which will be customized soon, are modern technology invented to unburden such troublesome labours from us humans. It is expected that soon those robots will take over all the emotional labours previously done by humans. Then in such a world free of emotional labours, will human nature still remain the same? Will humans live with more satisfaction and society be more peaceful? This paper is an attempt to answer the question with “No.” Humans will gradually lose their ability to sympathize, and will take the pains of the others as something strange and alien to themselves. The problem is sympathy is not just one of the human emotions, but their structural condition. The decrease of sympathy cause other feelings such as feeling happy others and laughing with them to disappear. Without the ability to feel the pains of others as our own, we cannot feel their happiness as our own. I will conclude that the exclusive employment of emotional robots for the jobs in need of emotional labours will result in the loss of human virtues.

감정노동이 중요한 사회적 의제가 되었다. 과거의 육체노동자는 후기산업사회에서 감정노동으로 대체되고 있는 실정이다. 그리고 기계로 육체노동을 대체하게 만들었던 과학기술이 이제는 감정로봇의 개발로 감정노동을 대체하려고 시도하고 있다. 만약 그것이 현실화된다면, 로봇의 감정노동 전담이 인간의 인간성에 어떠한 변화를 가져올까? 이 질문에 대답하기 위해서는 나는 먼저 감정노동이 인간의 공감 능력을 전제한다는 점에 주목할 것이다. 공감이란 약자의 고통과 곤란을 자신의 일처럼 느끼는 자질, 즉 타자되기의 자질이다. 데이빗 흄과 루소에 의하면 이러한 약자에 대한 공감 능력이 인간의 공동체적 삶을 가능하게 한다. 타자를 돕고 싶어 하는 감정은 공감의 발현이다. 그러나 감정표현과 감정노동은 동일하지 않다. 타자를 돕고 위로하는 공감 능력이 분업화되고 자본화된 형태가 감정노동이다. 우리 모두가 공유해야 하는 감정노동을 몇몇 직종의 종사자에게 전담하도록 하는 것이 우리의 현실이다. 그런데 로봇이 감정노동을 대신한다면 어떻게 될까? 인간은 감정노동의 부담과 고통으로부터 자유로워질 것이다. 강요되었던 감정노동에서 벗어나 자발적인 감정 표현을 즐길 수 있을까? 어려운 처지의 약자를 돕고 위로해야 할 필요성이 점차 사라지는 것이다. 그러면서 동시에 공감 능력도 약화되기 시작할 것이다. 더구나 공감 능력의 약화는 감정로봇 개발과 이용의 구조적 조건이라는 점을 적시해야 한다. 현재의 감정노동자에 대해 그러하듯이 만약 감정로봇의 피로와 고통에 대해 연민의 감정이 생긴다면 우리는 그에게 그러한 노동을 일임하기 어렵게 될 터이기 때문이다. 감정로봇을 사용하기 위해서는 그것의 감정을 철저히 무시하지 않으면 안 되는 것이다. 감정로봇은 감정을 느낄 수 있는 로봇으로 정의된다. 그럼에도 그에 대한 공감의 문을 철저하게 닫아야 하는 것이다. 그 결과 인간 약자를 향해 열려 있었던 공감의 문에도 자물쇠가 채워질 것이다. 그렇다면 인간은 고통이 없는 기쁨의 감정만을 향유할 수 있게 될 것인가? 그렇지 않다는 데 문제의 심각성이 있다. 타자를 자신처럼 느끼는 공감의 능력이 사라지면 우리는 타자의 기쁨에도 무감각해질 것이기 때문이다. 그리고 인간의 공동체적 삶도 불가능해질 것이다.
