This study explores how Korean citizens perceive reunification and evaluate its intrinsic and extrinsic value, and what determines it. Analyzing the public survey data culled by Korea Institute for National Unification in 2022, this study shows that, firstly, most Korean citizens believe that the reunification requires a single unified government, but they also believe that such a reunification is not desirable. Secondly, Korean citizens have a notable cognitive discrepancy over the intrinsic and extrinsic value of reunification, especially for those who have strong national identification, ideologically conservatives, and Youngnam residents. Thirdly, the public perception of the feasibility of reunification and national identification promote favorable evaluation of reunification, while the reliance of the information about North Korea on conservative TV channels conceals it. Finally, the stronger the belief that Korea is democratic, the higher the level of favorable evaluation of the reunification. Based on these findings, this study provides several suggestions for the improvement of the public favorable attitude toward Korea’s reunification.
