Ba-construction is the most unique construction in Chinese. The purpose of this article is how western missionaries treated this construction several hundred years ago. In the 17th and 18th centuries western missionaries such as Martino Martini and Francisco Varo simply mentioned classifier of ‘Ba’ and didn’t mention Ba-construction. In the 19th centuries, Robert Morrison and William Lobscheid also didn’t mention Ba-construction. In contrast, Karl Friedrich Gutzlaff, Josheph Henry Premare, Joseph Edkins analyzed Ba-construction from various angles including prototype of Ba construction, instrumental function, non-disposal use etc. Their view about Ba-construction is still available today, therefore we must reappraise these grammar books written by western missionaries in modern times.
