With the rapid increasing the proportion of the elderly population, one of the critical challenges is to apply appropriate strategies to make them be independent and healthy as long as possible. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the implementation of the’15-minute plus’ manual based senior exercise program on physical function and physiological measures. Fifty two NHIC regional offices were randomized to intervention groups (IG) in which the instructors were educated and asked to teach senior exercise class based on the 15-minute plus’ exercise manual, and to control group (CG) in which the instructors teach exercise without a manual. Both groups were guided to do moderate intensity of exercise, three times a week for 12 weeks. Dependent variables were 1) perceived health, 2) functional fitness, 3) physiologic parameter (i.e., SBP, DBP, percent fat, FFM) 4) psychological status (perceived health and depression). Among 912 seniors recruited from 52 sites, 579 seniors completed pre-post assessments. Subjects in both group experienced significant decrease in blood pressure, percent body fat and increases in fat free mass and physical function. Further, we found more significant improvement in lower body strength, mobility, self-rated health and exercise self-efficacy in manual based exercise group than those in control group.
