In the past few years, domestic nuclear power generation has been on a downward trend, mainly due to the policy of nuclear phase-out, but recently this policy has changed and interest in nuclear power generation has begun to increase. This change in policy is reflected in the government's move to actively utilize nuclear power, including the construction and export of additional nuclear power plants. In this situation, various problems with the Korean Nuclear Damage Compensation Act have been pointed out, mostly concerning the scope of the nuclear power operator's liability for damages and the amount of the liability limit. Therefore, this paper will examine the role of the government in the nuclear damage compensation system, focusing on the government assistance currently stipulated in the Nuclear Damage Compensation Act, and discuss the government assistance method for nuclear damage compensation that is suitable for the domestic environment by comparing the relevant systems of overseas countries.
