Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the commitment of pre-service elementary teachers to teaching physical education and identify the factors that influence this commitment.
Method: A qualitative research method was conducted by selecting 6 pre-service elementary teachers at the A National University of Education. Data was collected thruogh individual in-depth interviews with the participants, open-ended questionnaires, and notes from expert meetings. The collected data was analyzed using the inductive category analysis method proposed by Strauss and Corbin (1988). The analysis involved open coding, axial coding, and selective coding. To enhance the validity of the derived research results, methods such as member checks and peer reviews, as suggested by Merriam (1998), were employed.
Results: Two major themes were emerged regarding commitment to teaching physical education and the factors that influence commitment. Within the first major theme, “commitment to teaching physical education,” two minor themes emerged: “pre-service teachers with low commitment” and “pre-service teachers with high commitment.” In the second major theme, four minor themes were classified: the level of interest in physical activity, the difficulty and pressure of preparinga nd managing a lesson, the degree of teaching experience in physical education, and the reliance on physical education teachers and the sport instructor system.
Conclusion: Based on the results of the study on the factors influencing commitment, it is suggested that elementary teacher educators make efforts to enhance and develop the curriculum in pre-service teacher education programs. These enhancements are intended to better prepare pre-service elementary teachers to be committed to teaching physical education.
