This study aims to comprehensively analyze the educational implications of small-scale schools and evaluate the validity of the 2016 Ministry of Education’s school size criteria. Utilizing a four-year longitudinal dataset from the 2nd to 5th waves of the ‘Korean Education Longitudinal Study 2013,’ we employed propensity score matching and a random effects model to examine the educational impact of small schools. Additionally, we explored the non-linear relationship between school size and educational attainment to assess the appropriateness of the established school size standards. Contrary to concerns, our findings suggest that worries about potential declines in students’ social and academic competencies in small schools may be unfounded. Significant educational effects were observed in small schools, particularly in ‘student-centered teaching and learning’ and ‘parent satisfaction,’ indicating effective implementation of individualized education with dynamic student interaction activities. Our study supports a reevaluation of prevailing school size standards. Analytical outcomes estimate an optimal school size in rural areas ranging from approximately 500 to 600 students. This underscores the need for a nuanced examination through robust datasets to determine an appropriate school size by each school level.
