Shinwoo(Friends of the God) is a school magazine published annually from 1933 through 1939 by students of the Benedictine Seminary in Tukwon, Korea. In view of the fact that the first Catholic seminary's(Baeron Seminary, founded in 1855) school magazine, Alma Mater was published by its successor, Sungshin Seminary(聖神學校) in 1947, it is astonishing that the Tukwon Seminary(德源神學校) which was founded 65 years later than the senior seminary has brought its school magazine 14 years earlier than its senior. This signifies not only that the Benedictine seminarians were active and pioneering, but also that the Benedictine realized importance of the intellectual and cultural mission.
The Korean Benedictine Seminary was opened on November 1, 1921 in Seoul to educate seminarians for the Wonsan diocese, comprising a total of 14 years training, consisting of a two-year preparation course, a six-year middle school course, a two-year philosophy course, and a four-year theology course. In the opening year, 15 boys of 11 to 15 years of age were admitted. This school has moved to Tukwon and was reopened there as Tukwon Seminary on December 1, 1927. The number of seminarians was 52 in 1932, and reached 60 in 1939. The Shinwoo was prepared and published by these 50 to 60 students.
The first edition of Shinwoo, printed at print workshop of the Tukwon Seminary, was issued with 300 copies, while the seventh and the last edition in 1939 was issued with 700 copies. The magazine had a volume of 100 to 200 pages, with a rough average volume of 150 pages per edition.
The contents covered a variety of fields such as philosophy, religion, science, literature, etc. providing forums, poetries, essays, musical compositions, song writings, and the like to the missionaries, professors, and students.
The present study has highlighted the motive and objective of Shinwoo and the ground for cessation of publication considering the school inspection and the cultural repression policies of the Japanese colonial administration. This study further exploits the high intellectual and cultural level of the Tukwon Seminary and the Benedictine Mission in Korea.
The historical meaning of the school magazine Shinwoo can be summerized as follows :
1. Being the first ever school magazine of a Catholic seminary in Korea, Shinwoo was a pioneer and model for other seminaries.
2. Since one of the objetives of Shinwoo was to improve writing skills of the seminarians, this objective was very farseeing as the mission in writing becomes more important than verbal preaching nowadays.
3. The editing and contents of Shinwoo show a very high intellectual level of the Benedictine Seminary at that time.
4. Another characteristic of the magazine was its integrative nature, i.e. the authors comprised all members of the seminary(principal of the seminary, cleric professors, teachers inclusive of the Japanese teachers, and high school pupils as well as student seminarians).
5. Still another characteristic was that all seven editions of the magazine was made by the students. The seminarians have constituted an editing committee, which carried out all processes of editing, printing, and publishing of the magazine.
