The purpose of this study is to explore tasks of education ministry to develop the current status of teacher education in the Korean Protestant Church. This study consists of second parts. First, is the analysis of the current status of the Korean Church's teacher education programs (pre-service training & in-service training) and the tasks of education ministry is the second.
The analysis showed four major trends. First, 1,071 church school teachers in 4 different regions were surveyed to determine the current status of teacher education(pre-service training & in-service training). The analysis showed that teacher education was not practiced on a regular basis. Second, the common frequencies of both pre-service training and in-service training were “occasionally” and “short term.” “Teaching-learning guidance”, and “praise & dance” were revealed as the most popular subject matters in past training sessions. Teacher training was primarily lecture, which is one way communication, rather than a participatory style of instruction. Third, the survey revealed no significant change from 18 years ago. This reveals that the church of Korea does not have as much concern for their children and youth's education, as they do for their adult and aged congregations in the ministry.
The following recommendations are suggested for further study. First, Church ministry have to transform as education ministry in Korea. Second, teacher education is to be considered as a lifelong education. Third, the leadership of the teacher must be cultivated within the church. Fourth, teachers through the training are given an opportunity to spirituality mature with the help of the Holy Spirit. Fifth, continuous quality teacher education at every level should be provided.
