The purpose of the present study was to analyze the reading section of the English textbooks that are used in secondary education in Korea. Using the textbook analysis method, the study investigated the reading materials and activities presented in the English textbooks for the 2nd and 3rd grades of middle school and the 1st and 2nd grades of high school. For the analysis, the reading passages were examined for their topics, forms, and level of difficulties. Reading activities were investigated and divided by pre-during- and post-reading activities. Results showed a variety of topics of reading passages in each grade level, moving from general to more specific topics as the grade goes up. Regarding the forms, exposition and narration were found to be the major forms used in the textbooks. The study also found a wider gap in the level of difficulty between the textbooks for 3rd grade in middle school and 1st grade in high school, measured by the vocabulary and sentence structures used in the reading passages. Reading activities were found to be concentrated mostly in the post-reading stage. Implications for textbook development are suggested.
