In middle Chosen Korea when Nammyung Cho Sik(南冥 曺植) was still alive, Nammyung School sustained a size and embraced pupils enough to parallel with Toegye School(退溪學派) whose leader was Toegye Yee Hwang(退溪 李滉). Even though Nammyung school had a unique characteristic both in the Confucian history and Korean political history, there have been few studies focused on its significance in Korean political history. In particular, since this school was defeated and expelled from the central government in the mid 17th century, many families and people related with this school disappeared in the official history. This paper tried to restore the succession of Nammyung school experienced severe disconnection since that moment on centered on certain areas.
The provinces such as Miryang, Changnyung and Youngsan were closely related with Hangang Ch?nggu(寒岡 鄭逑), Youh?n Chang Hyungwag(旅軒 張顯光) in the intellectual history, and before them, they had been known strongly influenced by people consisting of Toegye school. This paper, however, revealed that when Toegye and Nammyung were still alive, the eminent Confucian leaders of those areas such as Songgye Sin Kyes?ng(松溪 申季誠), Imch?n Pae Hak(林泉 裵鶴), Mangudang Kwak Chaeu(忘憂堂 郭再祐) were closely connected with Nammyung rather than Toegye, and their descendants were embraced in the intellectual genealogy of Nammyung school. Furthermore, in the face of Imjinwoeran(壬辰倭亂:the Japanese invasion in year Imjin) they, specifically Kwak Chaeu and his followers, were actively involved in the righteous militia movements and aggressively forwarded onto the central government in Kwanghegun's regime(光海君). After the Incho Restoration(仁祖反正), however, their political power was getting declined since they deeply engrossed in the Ch?ng Han's treasonable conspiracy(鄭澣 逆謀) directly or indirectly and accordingly they intentionally secret their relationship with Nammyung school.
