The purpose of this study is to examine what value Comenius's 17th century Pansophiahas for our modem society.
The pluralistic values of modem culture actively proscribe the development of integrated knowledge. Given this condition, current thought lacks integrity and freedom, two features that were once available under the values and epistemology of F. Bacon and Descartes.
In this context, Comenius's Pansophia stands the test of time in some respects, particularly in regard to university education.
The relevance of Comenius' Pansophia fortoday's university education can be summarized as follows:
First, the Pansophia challenges us to engage in interdisciplinary study with a fundamental viewpoint. In a move strikingly different from current academic trends, Comenius does not describe interdisciplinary study as a simplistic combination of disciplines, seeking to conform to current trends in university education.
Second, the Pansophia provides a theroretical foundation for the idea that a Christian University is the preeminent location to offer a humanistic education. Currently however, many Christian universities pursue competitiveness and efficiency. These false values are almost always cast as opposites to humanistic though, precluding genuine education.
Third, the Pansophia also describes the necessity of excellence in communication, through relationships grounded in Christianity. Here, Comenius has much to offer for a technological society, where communication and social networks are a central issue.
