Translation is an act of creativity and artistic creation. It is not a simple transfer of linguistic signs but means more than that. Linguistic signs contain spirits, world-view, and cultural traits of the people who use the language. Translators bring these signs into the texts of their own language in a changed form to fit in the culture of the target language. Newly created texts of the target language are a complicated and multi-dimensional structure of communication that corresponds to socio-cultural environment. It is a matter of translators' personal decision based on their world-view and socio-cultural backgrounds.
His detailed efforts to keep the original intact and to translate as faithful as possible are to be seen throughout his translation works. Some of them not only satisfy modem standards but also exceed contemporary versions of translation.
His achievements as translator deserve fair and proper evaluation and need to be studied more deeply. The poems of Dongju Yun that were analysed in this article have been loved by many Koreans with their poetic beauty. Readers are free to understand the meaning of each poem according to their own views and therefore, it gives a room for varied and different translations from translator to translator.
The translator has much affection to Dongju Yun and studied Yun's poems very hard which qualifies him as a competent translator. He integrated contents and forms harmoniously in his translations. Many devices such as the shift of signs in the sentence that are used in this translation are only for the readers who are not familiar with the Korean culture.
However some English translations do not perfectly replace their Korean originals under his considerations for non-Korean readers. Sometimes, though, this leads to unsatisfying result to foreign readers, since while doing so, the translations may lose their atmosphere and nuance of the originals.
The translator himself is a responsible figure in America for the education of the Korean Language and literature and has knowledge about Dongju Yun. His translation works show the difficulties of translating Korean literary works. It implies the importance of understanding towards Korean culture and Korean Language & Literature.
