The Discourse on Book of Documents is the collection of philosophies, civilizations, and systems which was compiled in the Chinese Zhou dynasty period, and encompasses fundamental Confucian philosophies. These philosophies, which were taught to King Wu of early Zhou by Jizi in the late Yin period, encompass not only Zhou’s representative philosophy of the Classic of Changes theories, and royal principles which were systemized on the surface during the Warring States period, but also middle-of-the-road principle which well expresses Chinese characteristics, the political and heavenly profoundness, cosmological logics and practical philosophies.
Regarding his principal discussion of Confucian national welfare promotion plan, Sim Dae-yun first discussed the mind science and heaven’s principle of blessings and woes arguing that all human woes and blessings and interests (good and vice) were determined according to human minds, and also to the heaven’s mind reaction, and that the heaven and gods only responded to humans’ behaviors and acts. In addition, regarding his theory that the goodness and vice and woes and blessings of the king, subjects, people and nation were consistent, Sim Dae-yun argued that whether humans could achieve woes or blessings depended on human’s work instead on the heavenly providence, and thus that the key to achieving harmony among the heaven, the king, subjects, people and the nation depended on humans’ courtesy and leisurely minds. Nonetheless, he argued that since the ruling king, the people and the nation formed a single community of unification, thus leading to the principle of unification applying to their interests, and thus that the same principle of woes and blessings of the king and the people would apply, thus activating the principle of a common community bound by a common destiny.
