Korean learners of English as a foreign language affix ‘un/nun/i/ga’ as Korean subject markers, turning English subjects into Korean subjects. Although this seems to be unproblematic, it is not hard to encounter many inappropriate cases. The reason is that the learners consider subjects in English and Korean only in their functional perspectives. Maintaining the established appropriate system, this study suggests the need to consider other systems in terms of thematic relations, and presents solutions. In other words, turning English subjects into Korean, it is appropriate to affix ‘un/nun/i/ga’ to the latter subjects when they are assigned a thematic role such as AGENT, EXPERIENCER or THEME. When they are assigned other thematic roles such as INSTRUMENT, CONDITION or GOAL, however, it is grammatical to affix the postposition or conjunction for the roles to them and translate them as adjuncts.
