Today, the Ab’rok-gang river is serving as a ‘borderline’ distinguishing territories of both China and the Korean peninsula. But in reality, this river is not a line but a region. So as a ‘border,’ the nature of this river, as well as adjacent areas, should be defined with much deliberation, with many elements taken into account. For example, there are many big and small islands located in the middle of this river. Authority and jurisdiction over these islands can turn into debates and then escalate into conflicts. Total of 205 islands and smaller land pockets are now serving as the de-facto borderline between Korea and China.
Examination of how both countries initially approached the issue, when the matter of jurisdiction first emerged as a topic of interest, should inform us what kind of negotiating strategy was devised by the Joseon government, and at the same time should let us see how that affected the eventual outcome, in terms of jurisdiction settlements. So, examined in this article is the 16<SUP>th</SUP> century, when Joseon and Ming were warming up for extended jurisdiction fights over this region, as well as the nature of certain territorial views displayed by involved parties (and Joseon in particular). Why this issue was fired up at this juncture, how the Joseon leaders in the 16<SUP>th</SUP> century viewed the region as well as all the islands inside Ab’rok-gang, and what kind of cards they were willing to reveal in their negotiations with Ming representatives, are all analyzed here. Hopefully the Joseon government’s border policies and diplomatic methodologies dealing with Ming would be determined by this study.
