This paper aims to draw John Keats’ critique of transcendental Romanticism from his “La Belle Dame Sans Merci” by interpreting it in the context of its composition. Keats wrote the poem in a letter to George and Georgiana Keats, just after he wrote, in the same letter, “a little notice” of John Hamilton Reynolds’ Peter Bell, which was a parody of William Wordsworth’s Peter Bell. Unsatisfied with Reynolds’ parodic criticism of Wordsworth’s “sublime” nature, Keats determined to write his own parody of Wordsworth. The occasion of the poem’s creation will broaden the scope of interpretation, which has not been attempted in extant studies of the poem. Firstly, this paper conducts an intra-textual analysis of “La Belle Dame Sans Merci” to clarify Keats’ critique of the knight-at-arms’ supernatural perception with regard to his love of the “full beautiful” lady he met “in the meads.” Secondly, the extra-textual context of the poem’s creation is applied in order to extend the interpretation, viewing Keats’ critique of the knight’s supernatural perception as reflecting the poet’s critical stance to Wordsworthian “natural supernaturalism.” And thirdly, the last section of this paper illuminates the significance of Keats’ critique of Wordsworth as typifying the post-Romantic poets’ common criticism of the first-generation Romantics’ transcendental imagination.
