The purpose of this study was to analyze the effects of regular and continuous dance sport and swimming exercise on the change of body composition and femoral bone mineral density in middle-aged women. The subjects recruited for this study were 40 middle-aged women composed of 12 dance sport group and 13 swimming group and 15 control group. The subjects were measured in body composition and femoral bone mineral density by Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA). The statistical technique utilized in this study was ANOVA and the .05 level was initially established in significance. The findings of this study were as follows : (1)Body weight, % body fat, total body fat and body mass index were significantly lower in dance sport group than those of swimming group and control group, but lean body mass was not significantly different among three groups. (2)Bone mineral density of dominant femoral neck was significantly higher in dance sport group than that of swimming group and control group, but not significantly different between swimming group and control group and not significantly different among three groups in the great trochant and Ward`s triangle. It is concluded that body weight, % body fat, total body fat and body mass index were significantly lower in dance sport group than those of swimming group and control group. BMD of femoral neck was significantly higher in dance sport group than swimming group and control group. These results are shown that regular dance sport exercise is more effected than swimming exercise to improve the body composition and bone mineral density.
