The purpose of this paper is to examine Harold Pinter"s new vision in The Birthday Party. The characters in this play confront the existential terror, fear, and anxiety, but they try to overcome the absurdity of life and existential crisis and establish their identities. Pinter treats characters" existential anxiety, absurd situation, and deviations in reality. He also uses a non-verbal language which plays a role of describing isolation, absurd reality, and characters" self-defense.
Stanley who experiences regression tries to avoid existential reality under his psychological anxiety by some external threats but Pinter urges him to participate in the existential world. Protagonist, Stanley uses violence in the play of blindness because he needs to have defense mechanism under the threatening situation. It helps him to get a transient evasive attitude and protect his pride. Characters don"t know how to react to absurd reality and they are afraid of participation in existential reality. After all, Audiences can get various interpretations about characters" fate because he suggests open possibilities in The Birthday Party.
