This paper concerns ‘mobilized students’ who refused professional and college student recruitment for Japan, and were forcefully mobilized for industrial sectors during the Pacific War.
The Japanese government planned to stigmatize students who refused voluntary recruitment. As a result, the forceful mobilization of students was taken as a means of punishment. Until the liberation of Korea, they were placed in designated work places and underwent mental renovation to reconstruct them as subjects of Japan, while suffering from severe physical labors of carrying out stones in quarries and conveying poisonous materials from cement companies.
The mobilized students were not many, and the exact number is still unknown. Nonetheless, they have symbolic meanings of rejecting the Japanese invasion war during the Asia-Pacific War, representing the failure of the Japanese national mobilization policies and educational policies.
