A Personal Matter(1964) is an autobiographical novel reflecting the experiences of the writer KenzaburōŌe. Through the description of creative activities spanning more than half a century, it has a very significant meaning in the literary world that he accomplished. This novel has adopted the “I Novel” method, but it shows differentcharacteristics when compared against the lineage of traditional Japanese “I Novels.”This novel faithfully reflects the era of 1960s Japan, and this paper has focused on the way in which the characters reflect modern society. The purpose is therefore to analyze both the means and the resulting aspects. Religious metaphors appearing in the novel effectively show the historical background of the crisis. At the same time, the crisis has become a means of representing the artist’s personal life. This is a common characteristic of “Ōe” literature which appears to be repeated after A Personal Matter. In particular, this novel outspeaks its main conscious “personal” identity. This is therefore a very important novel to us living in the post-war era with the looming crisis of nuclear tragedy.
