Korean is a language which abounds in terms of address and referring expressions. In particular, Korean has rather complicated system of address which vary according to who the referrer or referent is as well as the conversation situation, social hierarchy and culturally induced subtextual information. Such terms of address may be a source of difficulty for translators. This study looks into the terms of address and referring expressions for female characters found in Korean short stories and how those expressions are translated into English, in order to bring to light what are some of the difficulties inherent in translation of referring expressions and what are some of the strategies utilized by translators to overcome those difficulties. Two very popular short stories by two renowned female writers are analyzed. The results of analysis show that most referring expressions are translated faithfully into target language but some of the culturally induced subtextual information are lost in the translation process, especially to ensure accurate delivery of meaning.
