This article focus on the writing of Hanshuzhu by author Yan Shi-gu (顔師古) in the Tang Dynasty in terms of ancestral learning and basic classical studies. The figure at the center of this is Yan Zhi-tui (顔之推), an ancestor of Yan Shi-gu (顔師古), who lived from the Period of Disunion when the Liang, Northern Zhou, Northern Qi, and the Sui were at war with one another. He carried on the traditional legacy of ancestral studies and deepened it, establishing himself as an ideal scholar official. He also believed that he could explicitly define this scholar official position through his poetry and basic classical studies. It seems that he thought this would a be method of overcoming the loss and dispersal of many of the books of the Wei, Jin, Northern and Southern Zhou after the widespread book burning by the Jin emperor (bunseo gaengyu, 焚書坑儒). For these reasons, Yan Zhi-tui (顔之推) and his descendants approached the ancestral learning of the Yan (顔) family and the study of basic classical texts seriously. Yan Zhi-tui's interests in the fundamental classics represents a documentation of scholarly traditions of the Yan clan which is expressed clearly in the Hanshuzhu of Yan Shi-gu.
