This paper aims to show the causes of errors in German compositions by Korean students and the necessity of valency-grammar in education of German composition. There are 16 common errors extracted from third year Korean college students majoring in German language. The causes behind these errors consist of factors that are both linguistic and not linguistic. However, this paper is restricted to studying only the linguistic factors of errors. This paper looks into five areas of orthographical, morphological, lexical, syntactical, and stylistic errors, as suggested by Lewandowski (1990). Error analysis can assist in finding causes for errors and in turn, help to find a method to correct the errors. Linguistic errors caused by interference of mother-tongue and by lack of the knowledge of valency-grammar attracted attention in this particular research. Therefore, the research shows that German educators must emphasize interference and valency- grammar in the future education of German composition.
