The burgeoning Korean multicultural society asks the mainstream native Korean people as well as the immigrant families to change their consciousness and attitude toward the harmonious Korean society. Despite this situation, the curriculum of social studies has only included the aims and contents of multicultural education which mainly target the assimilation of immigrant families into the mainstream society. Assuming that there is a limit to directly applying the American model of multicultural education in Korea, the purpose of this research is to consider ways to improve our multicultural education through researching the teachers’ perception of multicultural·intercultural educational contents in middle school social studies textbook. we learned that the teachers, level of understanding on multiculturalism was high. While they actively accepted and applied multicultural education, however, their understanding of intercultural education was low. This proves that our education system is caught in the fixed model of multicultural education. Through this research, we hope to find out whether intercultural education can make up for the weaknesses of multicultural education in Korea and be applied to the social studies subject, and also hope to help define the multicultural and intercultural educational content for future textbooks. The significance of this research is that it introduces intercultural education as a method distinguishable from multicultural education and reminds the readership of the necessity of continuous research on the possibility of intercultural education in geography education.
