The purpose of this study was to forecast RNs (registered nurses) supply and demand to identify whether RNs are surplus or shortage. A time trend model and an excess-demand index model were developed to estimate supply and demand for RNs. Data were collected from databases focusing publicly accessible data about actual employed RNs and nursing graduates, provided by several national institutes, such as Ministry of Health and Welfare, Korean Educational Development Institute, Korea Health Personnel Licensing Examination Institute. Supply and demand index were initially estimated by measuring the quantity of RNs demanded and supplied, and the excess demand index were finally analyzed over 2018~2030. Based on the year 2018, the supply index and demand index for RNs were projected to be 112.1, 104.7 in 2020, and 172.8, 128.0 in 2030, respectively. Excess demand index for RNs was projected to be less than one until 2030. In conclusion, supply and demand projection results suggest that government should recognize RNs workforce issues and reconsider the future planning of RNs' supply.
