Korea"s animation industry is a small domestic market, so the period of earning profits is very short and it is difficult to maintain profit model in the long run.
The Korean animation industry must go abroad. On the other side, China has the fastest growing and attractive flim market.
This study divided the cooperation strategies of Korean-Chinese animation into three and proposed an efficient way for Korean theater-version animation to enter China.
In addition, this study identified the pros and cons of each strategy and compared co-producing cases with box office results to suggest strategies for activating Korean theater-version animation into China.
Based on the date of release, Korean animations from 2013 to 2019 have entered the Chinese market in three categories.
First, it is a strategy of jointly investing and producing in cooperation of Korea and China. This is a strategy to produce animation for Korea and China theater-version using Korean IP.
Second, China"s localization strategy. This is a strategy for Chinese companies to purchase a copyright of Korean IP and get a certificate of Chinese copyright in order to release it as a Chinese theater animation.
After the release, a portion of the box office revenue is distributed to the original IP-owned Korean companies. This strategy is suitable for Korean companies where want to actively enter the Chinese animation film market.
Third, a strategy that Korean production company produces animation as an outsourcing company of Chinese company in order to enter Chinese market.
These strategies allow Korean companies to be outsourcers to Chinese companies. In this case, the contract method may be different depending on how Korean companies cooperate with Chinese companies for pre-production. Furthermore, we can expect continuous share profits in the Chinese market and entering the global market.
In this article, we proposed a method of collaborating with animation in various ways through three strategies and examples of Korean-Chinese theater animation.
The co-production cases are as follows. the 2013 Pororo Theatrical Edition: Super Sled Adventure, the 2017 Super Sticking out: A big strategy of Spy and the 2017 My Red Whale.
