The purpose of this article is to critically discuss how media researchers have used the concept of ‘media’, a product of the 20th century, and how the use of the word has been expanded in the 21st century. This article also suggests the directions in which the theorization and conceptualization of ‘media’ should proceed. The 20th century can be said to have been a period of media. At the beginning of the century, media began to become an academic problem, and researchers began to take an interest in media. The mass media era was established in the first half of the 20th century. However, the media left the frame of “mass” from the second half of the century and became independent as a subject of scholastic interest by itself. The media that was “between” other things now stands at the center of the stage. In this trend, everything in contemporary society has reached a situation where it is perceived as if there is nothing unrelated to the media. I argued, based on the understanding of media concepts accumulated over the past 100 years, that we need new theories that conceptualize the multilayeredness, multifacetedness, and multidimensionality of media. In addition, I presented the five dimensions (tools, contents, institutions, people, spaces/places) of multidimensional media that can be used for such conceptualization and theory construction. I also propose the necessity of a new media research approach to grasp media as an infrastructure.
