The distance between art and audience has been closer than ever before while the scope of interactive art has been expanding and the role of audience has become crucial with the development of technologies. But most of the arts tend to show limited outcome allowing audience to follow certain rules and produce certain results in back. With this perspective, this study suggests the artificial life art as an example to realize diverse results in the interactive art. To this end, we introduce the concept of artificial life and artificial life art which could be little known yet and present diverse cases on the field. For clear case classification, we use Mark Bedau’s analysis -Hard, Soft and Wet artificial life- which is intuitive and simple to classify. The 3 factors of interactivity-speed, scope and mapping-are used to ascertain the level of interactivity. According to these 3 factors, interactivity has something to do with how fast, widely and naturally human(audience) can manage the art environment. As a result, Hard type of artificial life art showed stronger interactivity than the Soft type, and the Wet type showed stronger interactivity than the Hard type. This is because the characteristics of Wet type of artificial life show continuous evolution by itself. This means it is able to lead diverse outcomes of art by providing customized interactivity per audience. We hope that the result of this study would be a stepping stone to explore diverse results of the interactive art.
