The aim of the present study is to analyze the literary works of Kenji Uchino, a Japanese writer who has not been widely recognized as yet. While Uchino is often regarded as a proletarian writer, we do not adopt this characterization and address his literary works themselves. The present work would be significant for shedding light on Chosun of the colonial era from another perspective. In particular, Uchino resided in Korea as a teacher but was deported from Chosun by the Governor-General of Korea. Our specific interest lies in the issue of how Uchino, a rootless Japanese writer who was deported from Chosun by the Japanese government, construed Chosun. His first poem collection, Doshou-ni Egaku, was prevented from being sold by the Governor-General of Korea, and he expressed his deep sorrow about it. Two years after he was deported from Chosun, the poem collection Kachi, whose title was based on Korean pronunciations, was published, and we take this as the key to understanding Uchino’s conception of Chosun of the time and his severe life to survive in Japan. Furthermore, his work written while he was in Chosun is compared with the work written after he was deported to Japan.
