The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between early childhood teacher’s empathetic ability and play-teaching efficacy, and young children’s playfulness, and the mediating effect of play-teaching efficacy on the relationship between early childhood teacher’s empathetic ability and young children’s playfulness. The participants for this study were two hundred thirty five teachers and children from 3 to 5 years old at early childhood setting in Seoul and Gueng-gi province. The study conducted a research survey including questionnaires, and the collected data were analyzed using frequency analysis, one-way analysis of variance, Pearson correlation analysis, hierarchical multiple regression. The results of this study were as follows: First, early childhood teacher’s empathetic ability and play-teaching efficacy, and young children’s playfulness were significantly different by teachers’ background variables. Second, there were significant correlations between early childhood teacher’s empathetic ability, play-teaching efficacy, and young children’s playfulness. Third, early childhood teacher’s play-teaching efficacy had a mediating effect on the relationship between teacher’s empathetic ability and young children’s playfulness. The results suggest that to develop young children’s playfulness teacher’s empathetic ability and play-teaching efficacy skills are crucial and necessary.
