The aim of this study is to investigate the effect the acculturation attitude of parents from multicultural families on self-esteem of their children. In this article, the National Survey on Multicultural Families 2015, conducted by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, was used and a total of 49,310 adolescents whose ages ranging from 9 to 18 were selected from the data. To analyze more exact relationship, the research was undertaken by matching data of parents(Korean and immigrant spouses) and their children. The results of this study are as follows. First, multicultural parents composed of Korean father and multicultural mother tend to show assimilative acculturation attitude on Korean culture. Second, parental acculturation attitude significantly affects self-esteem of the children. Specifically, the self-esteem of adolescents was likely to be low when their parents had assimilative attitude toward Korean culture, not equally accepting multicultural background, and multicultural adolescents were unwilling to open their family background to other people. Third, in terms of interaction effects, the type of multicultural family moderates the relationship between parental acculturation attitude and self-esteem of their children. This study suggests that multicultural parents’ policies should be extended to multicultural education in line with welfare support service and attribution change program for their adolescents.
