This paper examines the possibilities and significance of new materialistic inquiry applicable to research in early childhood teacher professionalism through a literature review and case analysis of new materialism, which has recently emerged as a new paradigm. To this end, the concepts and major theories of the new materialistic paradigm were reviewed, and the interrelated effects between humans and nonhuman matter were traced in the actualization of professionalism by reviewing research on early childhood teachers conducted from a new materialistic perspective. New materialism rooted in the perspective of post-anthropocentric monism overcame the binary system of thinking that focuses on subject agency and knowledge representation, providing early childhood education and care research with a methodological tool to disclose the entanglement and materiality of humans and matter. From the new materialistic perspective, the professionalism of early childhood teachers was conceived not as a fixed attribute that can be measured or conceptualized; rather, it was a complex, multilayered relational force produced by all kinds of materiality and relations within the entanglement that include humans, objects, time, space, social organizations, institutions, beliefs, and knowledge. The new materialism approach sought to discover a new understanding of professionalism divergent from the existing research discourses, and offered an exploration of social material production within assemblages that humans and matter constitute in daily events of early childhood education and care.
