This case study examined children’s experience of housing poverty with the aim of informing social welfare policies to alleviate this problem. Previous research has been limited to qualitative studies examining the seriousness of housing poverty in relation to child development. However, to address the problem of children living in housing poverty, more studies are needed to examine the children’s experience. Therefore, we collected data from nine children through in-depth interviews and analyzed the data qualitatively. Consequently, we derived six thematic categories and 16 subcategories. The six thematic categories were “discomfort as normal,” “unsafe surrounding environment,” “hiding housing conditions due to shame,” “spending more time outside the home,” “becoming more mature compared to peers,” and “looking forward to better housing.” On the basis of the results, we suggest practical and policy implications for resolving the problem of children living in housing poverty.
