The current study is designed to explore the status and necessity of digital media literacy education in elementary school, desirable education contents and methods, and ways to revitalize literacy education through in-depth interviews with elementary school teachers. In-depth interview results suggest that the level of education differs per school although digital media literacy education is being taught in accordance with developmental stage of students from 4th to 6th grade. This study found that digital media literacy education is conducive to increase of critical thinking ability, establishing the right values, communication skills, ability to write news articles and video production as well as building up basic grounding as a democratic citizen. In-depth interview participants suggest that a variety of media literacy education textbooks and professional education system for media literacy education teachers are required in order to promote digital media literacy education in elementary schools. Since research on digital media literacy education has been scarce in Korea, this study provides various implications as well as recommendations for digital media literacy education.
