The purpose of this paper is to focus on and develop the discussion of the phenomenon of parallelism in Psalm 145, as demonstrated among its verses, in light of the author’s dissertation on Psalm 119, “The Exegesis of Psalm 119 based on the Analysis of Parallelism – The Path of Piety led by tôrat-jhwh : An Antagonistic Pendulum Movement.” This paper briefly describes the parallelism in Psalm 119 and mainly focuses on the cases of ‘verse-level’ parallelism shown in Psalm 145.
For this purpose, this paper explores the literary features, focusing on parallelism, a common way of expression in ancient Hebrew poetry. In Hebrew poetry, a line is a unit of parallelism and is usually in a halfverse unit. However the parallelism among verses is prominently shown in Psalms 119 and 145, which are alphabetic acrostic psalms. Although many scholars who studied parallelism did not simply limit the line to the half-verse, studies on Psalms 119 and 145 were mainly focused on the structure and division of strophe or stanza rather than the verse-unit parallelism itself.
Along with Psalm 119, Psalm 145 belongs to the fifth book of the Psalms. Although Psalm 145 is smaller in scale than Psalm 119, it is also an alphabetic acrostic psalm, and the progression of verse-level parallelism is also prominent. In Psalm 145, the verse-level parallelism sometimes forms clusters and is sometimes crossed over, just like in Psalm 119. It forms a dynamic semantic flow of poetry that is not limited to a static structure as a strophe or a stanza.
This study, which compares the dynamics of parallelism in Psalms 119 and 145, can contribute to understanding the phenomenon of verselevel parallelism and broadening the understanding of parallelism, which has been mainly understood as half-verse-level parallelism.
