This study investigated the effect of media education conducted at school and home on the media literacy and communication ability in early adolescents. For the purpose, 203 students in the 5th to 6th grades of elementary schools in Seoul, Gyeonggi, and Incheon were randomly sampled and self-report questionnaires were used. The results showed that school media education had a significant effect on the ability to use the Internet, self-expression and critical understanding among the sub-factors of media literacy. It was found that the restrictive intervention of parents in home media education had a negative effect on the ability to use smart devices during home media education. On the other hand, the interactive intervention of parents had a positive effect on self-expression, which are the sub-factors of media literacy. In addition, it was confirmed that school media education had a positive effect on the communication ability of early adolescents, listening, and understanding. Finally, the interactive intervention of parents had a positive effect on self-expression and communication of early adolescents during home media education. The implications of these findings were discussed.
