Sanaji Taryeong is one of the representative folk songs of Jeonnam province. Having regular musical structure and melody, it has relatively more fixed musical compositions characteristics than other folk songs. It is a typical folk song, sung for the farming work and playing, and it possesses a variety of functions and is transmitted widely throughout the regions in Kyungnam, Jeonbuk, etc. This article has examined the musical characteristics of Sanaji Taryeong-related tunes which are observed in folk songs, vulgar songs, and shaman songs.
Firstly, Sanaji Taryeong is intensively transmitted in the eastern part of Jeonnam province, and Jindo Arirang is also frequently found in the eastern part. This attributes to the fact that in the eastern part of Jeonnam province where originally Sanaji Taryeong used be transmitted, Jindo Arirang is also transmitted and sang often.
Secondly, numerous modifications for Sanaji Taryeong is found is the eastern part of Jeonnam and for Jindo Arirang the western part of Jeonnam. However, these modifications does not extend beyond musical changes, rather they tend to be changed in the format or the lyrics. The reason for the relatively small changes in Sanaji Taryeong and Jindo Arirang is due to the fact that the length of their clauses are long, thus not appropriate for musical changes.
Thirdly, in the vulgar songs, the Sanaji Taryeong-ralated tunes are written in the same way the modifications for folk songs are written.
Fourthly, the Sanaji Taryeong-related tunes in the eastern part of Jeonnam province bear some relation to Sanaji Taryeong, and the Sanaji Taryeong-related tunes from the gut in the western part of Jeonnam seem to have been influnced by Jindo Arirang and Pansori.
