In this study we reviewed the dictionary description method of spoken vocabulary with focus on discourse markers. In existing Korean language dictionaries vocabulary is described with focus on the written language so that actual usages of the spoken language are not described properly. The biggest issue in vocabulary description in existing Korean dictionaries is that spoken expressions are identified only as contractions of form and thus treated as abbreviations. However, changes in form accompany variations in meaning. Furthermore, unlike the written language, spoken expressions accompany diverse connotations because of interactions between the speaker and the hearer and the immediacy of speaking. Yet, existing dictionaries fail to describe such contextual variations properly. Therefore, we develop ways to describe meanings of spoken vocabulary using spoken corpus with focus on certain discourse markers.
When describing the meaning of a discourse marker, different meanings within the same part of speech should be described as additional meaning items, while a separate list vocabulary should be used to describe a meaning for a different part of speech. Some think erroneously that all discourse markers must be described as exclamations. Typical discourse markers that should be described as exclamations are various expressions with the time-earning function. When prenouns such as 'i,' 'ku,' 'ce,' 'ilen' and 'kulen,' and adverbs such as 'ilehkey' and 'celehkey' are used for time earning, they should be treated as exclamations with appropriate explanations attached. Furthermore, contracted expressions that often occur in the spoken language should not be treated as merely 'short form of ---.' Rather, the meaning of each short form should be described specifically with illustration of actual usages.
