This research was to verify the changes in emotional health of obese middle-aged women, who implemented a 16-week rhythmic exercise program. All of the 50 subjects were obese middle-aged women who lived in S City, Kyungki-do, and participated in a program designed by the H University Department for Continuing Education. 25 of them were randomly assigned to an exercise group and the other 25, to a control group. The exercise group took a 60- 70-minute rhythmic exercise session 3 times a week, for 16 weeks. To analyze the changes and differences in emotional health between the two groups, Independent t-test were used, and the following results were obtained:
After the rhythmic exercise, somatization, depression, uneasiness and hostility, all of which are subordinate values of emotional health, showed decreases in the control group, and these values also exhibited meaningful differences between the two groups. Compulsion, panic and paranoia in the control group decreased after the rhythmic exercise, but no significant difference was found between the two groups. After considering all those results, we reached this conclusion: Rhythmic exercises can be said to promote good emotional health which is an important matter for obese women, and considered to be worthy enough as a leisure activity for adult women.
