The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of regular aerobic exercise on body composition and cardiovascular function in obese middle-aged women.
Subjects were 40 middle-aged women with their body fat over 30%: they were divided into two groups aquatic exercise group(N=20) and non-exercise control group(N=20). Experimental group trained during 12 weeks(60 min/day, 3 times/week).
The intensity of training was 70~00% of reserved heart rate. The results were as follows;
1. In body composition, the body weight and body tat were significantly decreased in exercise group after both 6-wk and 12 week training. However, there were no significant difference in control group.
2. In blood lipids, the level of HDL was significantly increased in exercise group after training. In contrast, the levels of LDL-C, T-C, TG were significantly decreased in exercise group after training. There was no significant difference in control group.
3. The maximal oxygen uptake for exercise group was significantly increased, whereas that of control group was not changed.
In conclusion, regular aerobic exercise performed in this study induced positive changes in body composition and blood lipid profile in obese middle-aged women. Therefore, we suggest that aquatic exercise can be a beneficial tool for improving cardiovascular function in obese middle-aged women.
