This study is intended to examine the contents of the Orient history and culture, i.e., the history and culture of Ancient Near East in current three High School textbooks of world history. It is the ancient Orient which is located at the starting point of ancient Western History and of general human history as well in terms of inventing letters and cities. Therefore, textbook must acknowledge it importance and pursue its accounts with accuracy and of recent scholarship.
Through analyses, I found a number of erroneous descriptions in every aspect of subjects such as time frame, place and personal names, terminologies, maps, tables, etc. Sometimes these errors occur in very basic knowledge. For example, one textbook presents the name of Persian royal family in error, and another comments a photo of archaeological remains from Hattusha in Anatolia as if it were from Sumer in Southern Mesopotamia. And also, I found that recent scholarship was not reflected in appropriate sections, and that it is only a couple of pages long, which is not enough to cover these cultures.
The problem of erroneous descriptions and wrong-presented learning materials in history textbooks is not limited to the cultures of the Orient. As other scholars have already pointed out errors in different times and regions of history textbook, this problem should have been checked and corrected by consultation with scholars, especially if we consider the position of school textbooks in our society. I hope these problems be fixed and the history of the Orient take proper evaluation in next history textbooks.
