This paper studies on the Interpretation Theory as a main principle of translation. Interpretation theory has been studied by the ESIT professors of Paris, including D. Seleskovitch, M. Lederer, and J. Delisle. They, as professional interpreters, have researched the process of interpretation for twenty years. They have argued that translation activity is the discourse process of language and Interpretation is comprehension of sense whether it is speech or writings.
Translation is a realistic speech act and reformulation of sense. The subject of translation is not from langue or parole but text, which can only be translated. This theory also conforms to the principle of translation of equivalence, which conclude object and characteristic of text, cultural- social context and the level of readers between source text and target text. To produce a successful translation, the construction of all-inclusive equivalence relation is needed. In other words, translators have to get beyond the level of words, language of SL text and reach the state of empathy of SL text, reemerging the meaning and context.
In addition to, this paper mentions a variety of equivalence concept from many scholars including Larson, Turk, Levy and Neubert. They argue the impotance of the equivalence of whole-text relating word order, linguistic equivalence, the strategy of politeness, social linguistic knowledge, and so on.
To apply this theory to a case, a part of a literature novel, chapter 14 of Cannery Row by J. Steinbeck, is translated into French and Korean version. In attempt to answer equivalence judgement of this text, this paper applies 'Koller's five different types of equivalence that describe Denotative, Connotative, Text-normative, Pragmatic and Formal equivalence. He distinguishes more closely the concept of equivalence and its linked term correspondence from his research paper. The question as to what exactly has to be equivalent between 8L and TL still remains. Consequently, interpretation theory is comprehension of meaning on the text or discourse and connected with equivalent translation.
